Starting a new dental/specialist practice can be an exciting and challenging experience. As a start-up dental practice owner, it's important to have a solid plan in place that sets the foundation for success and outlines clear steps towards achieving your goals. It's important to note that I recommend other services in my network where I don't have expertise, or where I feel my client could benefit. I always recommend my clients to see their accountant, have a lawyer and perhaps use a Property Group to secure a lease or purchase given the nature of leasing or buying in the eastern states.

A Business Plan worked successfully for both practices I owned and worked. Our practice grew into 2 technologically rich practice locations, one purpose-built, with a turnover five-fold and selling profitably in 2015. The orthodontic practice doubled in size, expanded its product range suited to changing markets, engaged new doctors and became more profitable.


A business plan sets out your goals and methods for attaining those goals within a time frame. As a Business Consultant, I assist dental owners to determine their long-term thinking, (strategic planning), and primary goals for their business. I analyse all aspects of the organisation and assist with practice management planning and implementation for profit maximisation, sustainability, possibly succession planning and overall happiness in owning a business.


A Business Plan is a much more involved process and takes a considerable amount of work from the owner in the short term. I would recommend a Business Plan at the outset for a start-up practice. Generally, when operating systems are established and everything is running better, you are in a better place to look at a Business Plan. If you have a practice that has been going a little longer, a business plan involves more of my time working with you, although I am not hands-on all the time.


I work with you on the plan by explaining what needs to be completed. We work on it in small increments. I give you "homework" which I request back within a mutually convenient time frame. After these baby steps, the business plan is presented. As you are the one that has delivered the content, you have full ownership. I give you recommendations and ways to assist in monitoring and achieving those goals using key performance indicators. For example, you are considering investing in more equipment. Many questions get raised. Do you have the financial capability to make this purchase? Have you got the patient load to service this purchase? What will be the return on investment? These questions are analysed when doing these small increments.


In the end, it’s usually actionable with a cash flow forecast that is monitored monthly. I would be working with you for 6 - 12 months depending on how quickly you could work on the plan. I come back 6 months after the completion of the plan to ensure your progress is being successfully implemented.
