AI IN DENTAL PRACTICES: What Is Useful Now and What Is Coming Next?

Executive Summary

Artificial intelligence is developing quickly across dental and dental specialist practices.

The most useful applications are not necessarily the most dramatic. They are the tools that reduce repetitive work, improve documentation, support clinical decision-making and help teams communicate more consistently with patients.

Current opportunities include:

  • AI clinical scribes

  • radiograph and image analysis

  • treatment coordination tools

  • AI phone agents

  • stock and sterilisation systems

  • marketing and communication support

  • AI agents that can complete multi-step tasks

The goal is not to replace clinicians or team members. It is to reduce unnecessary administrative work so your people can spend more time on patient care, communication and follow-up.

Start With the Problem, Not the Technology

AI is moving at an extraordinary rate. Images, voice technology and language models have all advanced significantly in a very short period.

This can make practice owners feel they need to implement everything immediately.

They do not.

Start by asking:

  • What repetitive task is taking too much time?

  • Where are errors or delays occurring?

  • What is the team repeatedly typing, checking or explaining?

  • What work is being left unfinished when the practice becomes busy?

Once you understand the problem, you can assess whether AI, automation or better use of your existing software may help.

AI Clinical Scribes

Clinical notes remain one of the clearest opportunities.

AI scribes can listen to a consultation or use dictated information to create a draft clinical note based on the clinician’s preferred format. The clinician still needs to review and approve the record, but the tool can reduce typing time and the mental load associated with documentation.

Dental-specific platforms such as Noted Dent are particularly relevant because they have been developed with dental terminology, workflows and clinical requirements in mind.

This matters. A platform built for general healthcare may not always understand the way dentists and dental specialists document treatment, chart teeth or structure their notes.

Clinical Imaging and Treatment Support

AI is also being used to support the interpretation and presentation of clinical information.

Tools such as Pearl AI can highlight potential areas of concern on radiographs, providing an additional layer of support for the clinician and a clearer visual for the patient.

CoTreat offers tools that support both clinical analysis and treatment coordination. This may include identifying possible concerns, checking information and presenting treatment recommendations in a format patients can understand more easily.

These tools do not replace clinical judgement. They support the clinician by providing another source of information and helping patients better understand what has been identified.

AI Agents and Patient Communication

AI agents are becoming one of the fastest-moving areas.

Unlike a basic chatbot, an AI agent may be able to complete several connected steps, such as answering a call, identifying the patient’s request, accessing permitted information and completing an action.

For dental practices, this may support:

  • answering missed or after-hours calls

  • responding to common questions

  • capturing new patient enquiries

  • assisting with bookings

  • sending reminders

  • supporting recall and reactivation activity

This is particularly relevant for practices using older, server-based practice management systems with limited integration options. Providers are exploring ways for phone and voice agents to work around some of these restrictions.

Voice platforms such as ElevenLabs can also help practice owners understand how natural AI-generated speech has become. You may not be ready to use it, but listening to the technology helps you understand what patients may soon experience.

Reducing Repetitive Work Across the Practice

AI is not limited to clinical care.

Practices are also using technology to reduce manual work in areas such as:

  • stock ordering and inventory management

  • sterilisation tracking

  • onboarding and training

  • patient recalls

  • social media content

  • treatment plan communication

  • reporting and data analysis

The opportunity is significant because your team is generally your largest cost and one of your greatest assets. Having qualified team members repeatedly complete basic administrative tasks is rarely the best use of their time.

The aim is to redirect their time towards work that requires judgement, empathy and human communication.

What Practice Owners Need to Consider

Before implementing any AI tool, review:

  • where patient information is stored

  • whether the platform is appropriate for Australian privacy requirements

  • who can access the information

  • whether the output can be reviewed and corrected

  • how the tool fits with your current systems

  • whether the team will actually use it

  • what measurable problem it will solve

Dentists and specialists are evidence-based professionals. The same approach should apply to technology.

Do not adopt a platform because it is impressive. Test it, complete your due diligence and confirm that it improves the way your practice operates.

Final Thoughts

AI will continue to change rapidly.

The practices that benefit most will not necessarily be the ones using the greatest number of tools. They will be the practices that identify one genuine operational problem, select the right solution and implement it properly.

Start small.

Choose one repetitive task, one documentation issue or one communication gap. Test a suitable tool, measure the result and build from there.

AI should support your clinicians and team, not create another complicated system they need to manage.
